2nd December Int. Model Railroading Day: My First Year Journey with Märklin H0

On every 2nd December since 2016, German (probably also European) model railroad enthusiasts and modellers celebrate the International Model Railroading Day (dt. Internationaler Tag der Modelleisenbahn). The well-known Eisenbahn Romantik moderator Hagen von Ortloff searched high and low if there was a day where model railroad enthusiasts could celebrate their hobby and found none. So, 2nd December was chosen as it is around this time that the model railroad fever starts as people takes out their models for the winter/Christmas season playtime and as Christmas gift for self and their kids. A Childhood Dream I grew up in the railway … Continue reading 2nd December Int. Model Railroading Day: My First Year Journey with Märklin H0

Review: Märklin 3600 Delta Digital “750 Jahre Berlin” Set

I have been observing this H0 set on Ebay for more than 1 year and finally bought a relatively new, never been run set. Märklin produced three types of this commemorative set in 1987 in conjunction with the 750 years founding of the city Berlin (1237-1987). Set 3100 is H0-analog while the above set 3600 is H0-Delta digital. Set 8887 is in Z-scale. Berlin had in the late 18th and first half of 19th century up to World War II 3 large factories that manufactured locomotives, of which the second largest steam locomotive manufacturer in the world and the largest … Continue reading Review: Märklin 3600 Delta Digital “750 Jahre Berlin” Set

Review: Train Service Tray for TLC

When you have rolling stocks – be it locomotive or wagon – eventually, you need to service and maintain them. The service maintenance workshop for scaled-models is a train service tray (dt. Lokliege). The one below is made from soft foam (there are trays made from hard foam); thus, providing the necessary cushion for the protuded parts eg. drivers or small, detailed parts such as whistle or pipings. My longest steam locomotive is 32cm while the service tray is 35cm long (Foto: Jimmy Low (c)) I can lay the train on its side (above) or when I want to work … Continue reading Review: Train Service Tray for TLC

I try to keep my blog relevant and fresh as I acquire more models, complete my Loewenherz and plan for my eventual Märklin layout. Today, I upgraded my WordPress site from Basic (free) to Personal plan; thus, removing WordPress ads from my blog and some new features that were not available in Basic plan. In addition, I registered german87AC.com domain name. Besides the new look-and-feel to the website, I also designed a new logo. The first logo only has Borsig Baureihe 53 freight locomotive. Now that I have 3 steam locomotives – Baureihe 53, Gt 2×4/4 and Baureihe 74 – … Continue reading germaN:87AC Has New Logo and URL

germaN:87AC has Sister Site germaN:160

For those who know me, know that I am an N-scale and DCC modeler for many years. Moving to Märklin H0 and AC system may sound like I have “jumped ship” (figuratively). That is definitely not the case. When I decide to acquire my first German steam locomotive (I have a LNER Class A4 Mallard 4468 in OO-scale from Hornby), it was a conscious decision that it will be HO-scale (pronounced in German H0 (Ha-Null)) AND a Märklin. I am not giving up my dream to restart my N-scale layout germaN:160 “Somewhere in Germany”. My blog germaN:160 serves as my … Continue reading germaN:87AC has Sister Site germaN:160

germaN:87AC in Märklin H0 AC

I have been dabbling in the DC model railway for more than 10 years mainly in N-scale (1:160) for obvious reasons: I like to run and operate long-trains – passenger or freight and due to lack of space to build a reasonable layout to realize this vision, N-scale is an obvious choice. To me, it is a good balance between size, availability of modern-era rolling stocks and the operational realism that I wanted to achieve. Hence, germaN:160 was born, representing Epoch VI (2007 – present) My interest in HO-scale has always been latent; knowing that I could not afford the … Continue reading germaN:87AC in Märklin H0 AC
