Module 1b Sans Cabling Finally Completed

I reserved the whole of May to complete the two modules by 31st May. I built the frame and added the legs for Module 1b, which was the easier of the 2 modules. I stopped half way as work in office required my attention even on weekends. Then came 2 weeks bouts of sever hay fever. In combination especially the hay fever prevent me from finishing the 2 modules as planned. After some stronger medication and nasal spray, I finally completed Module 1b. Here is from start to finish, from drawing to realisation. I am happy with the end results. … Continue reading Module 1b Sans Cabling Finally Completed

Achieving Realistic, Weathered Track on Plinth

Since my last post “Building H0 Plinths for Exhibitions“, I am have been working on my module construction. Between module constructions, I use my spare time – mostly after work – to do other DIY projects, which are fillers for my Loewenherz module. This time, I added ballast on the stone plinth and tested the effect. I used Wolfgang Tschunkert‘s ballast and granite 0.5-1.0mm granularity, a mix ratio 2 : 1. When you add the mixture of water and glue on the ballast, unfortunately it will turn the grey ballast black. I did not like this effect. This “blacken” effect … Continue reading Achieving Realistic, Weathered Track on Plinth

Märklin Delivers Special Donation Car “Frieden in Europa (Peace in Europe)” to Loewenherz

As the Ukraine war drags on, we are reminded of the peace that the European and world communities cherish. Märklin sends its special passenger/donation car to Loewenherz Railway Park in Bad Niedrigsrode for a special exhibition. The special second-class passenger/donation car (Type Bpmz 293.2 open seating car) comes in Ukraine flag (blue/yellow) livery and the white peace dove. The park management has prepared a concrete plinth for this exhibit piece and is in the process of getting it ready for the opening on 25th June 2022. Bad Niedrigsrode Approves New Train Spotting Platform for Railway Park

Loewenherz is a popular spot among the locals and train fans alike. Since its inception in 1982, train spotters gather at the platform to view (or spot) passenger and freight trains that pass through the city Bad Niedrigsrode. The city planning office recently approved the construction of a new viewing platform on the original site. A wheelchair-friendly ramp will be constructed to allow access to the platform with a maximum gradient of 4.8%. This will allow the disabled person on wheelchair to climb the ramp unaided; according to DIN 18040-1/2, max. 6.0% when unaided. During the 6-month construction period, the … Continue reading Bad Niedrigsrode Approves New Train Spotting Platform for Railway Park

Prototyping a Pedestrian Tunnel for Park Connection

The main tracks cut across the railway park; thus, separating the viewing platform from the rest of the park. One option is an overhead bridge across the tracks. Or you can go underneath. I chose to go underneath. Challenges with Going Underneath Going underneath presents a few challenges for me as you can see from this contour drawing. Prototyping the Pedestrian Tunnel Design Parkett floor laminations 3mm allowed me to test my design. This one is 280mm long and 80mm wide. I hanged the prototype on the side of the end module template and marked any changes I wanted. My … Continue reading Prototyping a Pedestrian Tunnel for Park Connection

Loewenherz Taking Shape: Module Materials

Module framework design and contour drawings finalized. Material selection and shopping list for birch and poplar boards completed and it is time for shopping. I recalled my experience with buying materials for my then N-scale segment layout in 2014. I did not have a car then and had to use a push cart to carry the board 600m home and then spending 3 weekends and countless backache to cut them into sizes. Thank God that the local hardware stores offer cutting service to your requirements. It made my module construction much easier this time. Continue reading Loewenherz Taking Shape: Module Materials

Defining Contours and Depth on Loewenherz Modules

The MIST-61 module standards define the end module as an important element for integration and transition between modules to ensure seamless interoperability. Any modular layouts such as FreMo follow such design principle. Anything between two end modules is up to the individual. As for Loewenherz module, it consists of 2 segments – each segment is 1080mm x 150mm – as shown below. Can these 2 segments be separated to form individual module? Short answer, Yes. The long answer: each segment, which I marked above as Module 1a and 1b can be taken apart and connect to other’s modules. This is … Continue reading Defining Contours and Depth on Loewenherz Modules

Building H0 Plinths for Exhibitions

Locomotives and wagons on exhibit needs a stable foundation to rest. In fact, Loewenherz has at least 3 plinths for permanent and revolving exhibits. I experimented with 10mm plywood and 3mm cork as materials for various forms of plinths. Each material has its own merits – weight, stiffness, ease to mold etc. as well as look-and-feel. I wanted to experiment. Material: 10mm Plywood vs 3mm Cork In terms of hardness, no doubt plywood fulfilled its purpose. You need a wood saw and other tools to cut into shape. Cork is easy to cut with a paper cutter and shape but … Continue reading Building H0 Plinths for Exhibitions

Designing a Stable Module Framework

The last time I designed and built modules was back in 2014 when I had space temporarily for my 4 x 1.5m N-scale “Somewhere in Germany” segment layout. I have learned a lot from my experience and provides me a good understanding and knowledge how to build Loewenherz modules. MIST-61 adopts the module standards and practices from MIST-55 (Mainz). The end module is 450mm x 150mm. The length of each module is up to the members. I chose 1080mm using standard pieces of Märklin C-tracks 24172 and 24188. Module Construction Drawing I am a perfectionist and stickler for details. I … Continue reading Designing a Stable Module Framework

From Conception to Realisation: Module “Loewenherz Railway Park”

In April, my home club Märklin Insider Stammtisch 61 (MIST-61) had our first operating session after 2 years hiatus due to the Corona pandemic. This was my first official appearance as a MIST-61 member. It was a great learning curve for me as I helped with the setup of various modules and had a look at how various members designed, constructed and landscaped their respective layouts. Feeling inspired by the beautiful, detailed and awesome layouts, I considered long and hard, what I was for my first module. The Birth of “Railway Park” Modules I have 2 Märklin steam locomotives (so … Continue reading From Conception to Realisation: Module “Loewenherz Railway Park”
