Elegant “Damper” Solution to a 2mm Gap Problem

As they say in the carpentry business, “measure twice, cut once!” Despite all the best effort and machinery, you might not get the precise cut that you asked for. I found out about this when I was testing the module electrical connection with my mentor René. Each module base was supposed to be exactly 1080mm long. The Märklin C-tracks are exactly 1080mm but the module itself is exactly 2mm short. It may not seem to be a problem but it is an obvious gap.

I thought about the gangway between two carriages. It serves as a damper and an enclosure. I applied the same concept to close the 2mm gap between the 2 modules. When the modules are screwed together, the tracks will fit but leave that obvious gap. I used 2mm thick Finnish cardboard from Architecturebedarf.de

2cm strips on 3 sides and bottom of module end serve as “gangway” and “damper” to close the obvious gap between modules (Foto: Jimmy Low (c))

Instead of covering the whole end module, I just taped 3 sides with 2cm wide strips to cover the visible parts to visitors namely the both sides and top. A short strip covers the bottom middle part.

Now, all the visible 2mm gap is concealed. Problem solved!
